Two species of lupine thrive throughout Alaska-- the Nootka Lupine (L. nootkatensis - shown) and the Arctic Lupine (L. arcticus).  Both lupines bloom in meadows, dry slopes, and along roadsides.  The pea-like blossom ranges in color from light pink to deep purple.  Although lupines benefit the soil with nitrogen-producing bacteria found in its roots, they may be harmful, even deadly, to livestock and humans.
